Coordinator's Corner
Do you know the Johnny Cash song, "I've Been Everywhere?" Well, this month, I've been singing that song, but substituting the words to "Assets everywhere, man. Assets everywhere! I've been to...." Its been a great month at Great KIDS -we've been racking up trainings all over the place! Every Monday evening, we've been over at A Hope Center Primetime, facilitating our Say Yes to No discussion series with the parents there. Saturday, March 3, we presented the 40 Developmental Assets at University of St. Francis's Best Practices Showcase. We have completed two of a three part series on the 40 Assets for New Haven High School students (the third is scheduled for April 11), and have been excited to find 50+ engaged and enthusiastic students eager to talk about the Developmental Assets - at 8am, no less!
Early in March, we announced a community training on the 40 Developmental Assets, and within twenty-four hours, the training was full. We quickly added as second training, and that one is filling up too (although some space is available if you are interested!) With that announcement came the offer to schedule 40 Developmental Assets presentations for agencies, and you took us up on that offer! We completed a two-hour Assets session with Whitington Homes and Services staff members, and have scheduled presentations for staff members at Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Neighborhood Action Center, Caring About People, Fort Fun Daycare, and New Haven Kiwanis Club, along with our two community wide trainings, four trainings for Phoenix Institute Foster Parents on Trauma-Informed Care (which we are able to do as a part of training we received from our former Conference on Youth speaker, John Micsak's National Institute on Healing and Wellness), a trip up to Angola to work with folks in Steuben County starting their own assets initiative, and a trip down to Indy to speak at the Probation Officer's state conference.
There is always room for more, however! If you would like to have us out to your agency, organization or group to talk about how the 40 Developmental Assets or any of our other trainings relate to the work you do or the relationships you have with young people, let us know! We can create a presentation that fits for you.
See you on the road, everywhere!

Speaker Spotlight |
It may seem like October is far in the future, but on the Great KIDS calendar, it's just around the corner! This year's 23rd Annual Conference on Youth (new location! Allen County War Memorial Coliseum) will feature keynote and workshop speaker Gene Roehlkepartain. Mr. Roehlkepartain is the Acting President for the Search Institute - that wonderful think tank out of Minnesota responsible for the 40 Developmental Assets.
Gene joined Search Institute in 1991, first as the publications director, then as head of the Institute's Center for Spiritual Development, and eventually gaining the title Executive Vice-President before becoming Acting President of the Institute upon the death of the long-time CEO, Dr. Peter Benson, last year. He has been leading research into youth development, including publishing more than thirty books and articles youth development.
Great KIDS staff members have heard Mr. Roehlkepartain speak at a number of Search Institute Conferences over the years, including taking a leading role in the 2010 Big Tent Conference, in Houston, Texas. More recently, Mr. Roehlkepartain and Great KIDS Coordinator Megan Kelly were featured last summer on the nationally broadcast radio show, All In Our Family, hosted by Yolanda Robinson.
Gene is personable, accessible (as his Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, MyLife, and other accounts will attest!), and a great resource for information on positive youth development, assets, spiritual formation in young people, and more. You do not want to miss his presentation at the 23rd Annual Conference on Youth!
