 Karen Dunne-Maxim, RN, MS, Consultant for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey University Behavioral HealthCare and Founder, Traumatic Loss Coalitions for Youth 

 

Karen Dunne-Maxim, RN, MS. is a family therapist and consultant with Everest Consulting Associates. She specializes in issues related to traumatic loss events. She recently retired from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where she was the founding Director of New Jersey's Traumatic Loss Coalitions for Youth project. She has developed innovative models for responding to the special needs of families and school systems following traumatic loss events. As the survivor of her brother's suicide, she has been a pioneer in the effort to enlighten the public about suicide and to eliminate the stigma often associated with this type of death. She has been a frequent consultant to print and television media and is widely published including co-editing the books: Suicide and Its Aftermath, Child Survivors of Suicide: A Guidebook for Those Who Care for Them, and Managing Sudden Traumatic Loss in the Schools. In addition, she co-produced the film, People with Serious Mental Illness at Times of Disaster, A Focus on Caregivers. She is the recipient of the Excellence Award from the University of Medicine and Dentistry, Distinguished Mental Health Clinician Award from the New Jersey Mental Health Association, the Farberow Award of the International Association of Suicide Prevention, the Paloma Award from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the Survivor Award from the American Association of Suicidology and Post 9/11 Commendation from NJ State Office of the Governor.
