Great KIDS make Great COMMUNITIES is proud to help sponsor the Allen County United Youth Summit, to be held at the Grand Wayne Center on April 21, 2007. The Allen County United Youth Summit is made possible through the support of the Allen County Commissioners, the City of Fort Wayne, Great KIDS make Great COMMUNITIES, Leadership Fort Wayne, Operation United Power, Purdue Extension Services and the United Way.
What is the Allen County United Youth Summit?
The Youth Summit is a daylong event designed to empower youth, being held at the Grand Wayne Center. There will be speakers, workshops and even a keynote from Jeff Yalden, famous motivational speaker featured on MTV’s Made. The Summit is designed by youth and youth leaders, for youth grades 7-12.
Why April 21, 2007?
The date is important because it follows the April 20th United Way Youth Day of Caring, and will allow youth to talk about what they learned from completing Day of Caring projects. However, youth who DIDN’T do Day of Caring projects are encouraged to go too – this won’t prevent you from fully participating (although we hope that you’ll get involved in a Day of Caring project!)
So this is just a motivational session, right?
WRONG! We want the lessons learned and the empowerment gained from the Allen County United Youth Summit to continue to flourish well after the Summit itself. Youth will be talking about important topics including: Teen Health, Justice, Finding Your Voice, Team Building, and Being a Public Servant. From there, teens will have the chance to voice what they would like to see done in the county to improve it and the lives of youth and adults! At the end of the day, participating youth will have the opportunity to apply for grants through Youth as Resources to see their ideas come to fruition!
What’s the cost
Five dollars a person, with group discounts available. See the Youth Summit’s website www.acuys.org for more details.
What’s needed?
We need youth professionals and leaders from churches, schools, community groups, sports teams, after-school programs etc., to sign up and bring their youth. We also need adult leaders to help teens see their youth-led projects through. Lastly, we are looking for youth with leadership capabilities to help us execute the Summit. If you have youth who fits that description, bring them an informational session, held at the NEW downtown Library February 22, at 4:00pm.
